Africa-Press – Angola. Governor of Huíla, Nuno Mahapi, highlighted Monday, the achievements of Justino Handanga in affirming music in the national language and his contribution to the recognition of culture, through songs.
In Lubango, regarding the artist’s death, due to illness, in Luanda, the governor stated that Handanga was a regular “guest” in cultural activities in Huíla and, therefore, “adored”, due to his performance.
He highlighted that Justino Handanga was, until then, considered one of the “heavyweights” of the national songbook, meaning that the artistic class is “poorer” with this loss, as he is one of the unavoidable and referenced figures of Angolan music, whose work It is often enjoyed at parties of different age groups.
“We lost an icon of various musical styles and a promoter of Angolan popular music, who stood out for songs sung in the national language Umbundu as a flag of his identity”, – he said.
Handanga participated, in 2005, in the 15th edition of the Top dos Mais Queridos on Rádio Nacional de Angola, coming in 3rd place, with the well-known song “Paulina” and, in 2006, coming in 5th place.
Popular style musician began his musical career in the 80s, after having lost his parents, at the age of five, with participation in the competition called “Pió-Pió”, held on Sundays by the Agostinho Neto Pioneers Organization (OPA), in municipality of Bailundo, where he imitated national and international musicians.
The author of hits such as “Ndumbalundo”, “Olonamba”, “Te saudades”, “Paulina”, “Carlito” and “Abílio”, joined the ranks of the Angolan National Police on October 10, 1992, after completing his service military in the former FAPLA.
