Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan swimmer Lia Lima won the gold medal in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 1:05.08 on Saturday night in Luanda, , confirming her status as the favorite at the International Championship taking place at the Alvalade swimming pool.

After winning the silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2024 African Championships, also held in Angola, Lima dominated this time.

Representing Belenenses of Portugal, Lima left her compatriot Carlota Silva, who clocked 1:10.32, and Mozambique’s Marta MPfumo, who finished in 1:12.89, behind her.

The national women’s team also performed well, with veteran Maria Freitas winning gold in the 200-meter medley with a time of 2:32.38.

Lia Lima took second in this event with a time of 2:38.59, and Stephanie Jurado took bronze with a time of 2:41.73.

Another Angolan who stood out on the penultimate day of the competition was Nhara Fernandes, who won the 200-meter breaststroke in 2:50.28. She beat Maria Freitas, who came in second in 2:51.14, and Zambian Johanna Coates, who came in third in 2:56.19.

Santiago dominated the men’s events, winning gold in the 100-meter butterfly in 1:04.77 and the 400-meter freestyle in 4:27.37, adding six gold medals to his personal tally.

Angola remains in second place with 43 medals: 12 gold, 12 silver, and 19 bronze.

Meanwhile, Namibia continues to lead with 14 gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals. South Africa, competing with a B team, is in third place with five gold medals, five silver medals, and one bronze medal.

Fourth place goes to Clube Náutico da Ilha de Luanda (CNIL) with 16 medals, including four gold, eight silver, and four bronze. Portugal is in fifth place with three gold and four silver medals.

Mozambique is in sixth place with two gold, two silver, and five bronze medals. The Zambian team is in seventh place with five medals: one gold, two silver, and two bronze.

Onda Sport Clube is in eighth place with two medals (one silver and one bronze); Clube Barracudas de Luanda is in ninth place with two bronze medals; and 1.o de Agosto is in tenth place with one bronze medal.

The International Championship, which is part of the festivities marking 50 years of independence achieved on November 11, 1975, will end on Sunday.
