Minister Discusses Impact of International Events in Angola

Africa-Press – Angola. The Youth and Sports minister, Rui Falcão, stated on Thursday that the organization of the African Senior Men’s Basketball Championship “Afrobasket2025”, held in the provinces of Luanda and Namibe, between August 12 and 24, received a positive assessment from FIBA.

Speaking at the IV meeting with the press since his appointment in 2024, to address aspects of current national sports, the minister said that the governing body of basketball in the world quantified and released a report on the event which values it.

He stated that 4 billion kwanzas were spent on Afrobasket, where Angola regained the title 12 years later, and that the FIBA report presents encouraging data.

He cited, as an example, the more than 51 billion kwanzas of economic impact in Afrobasket and 18 billion in image impact, figures higher than those of countries with greater resources than Angola.

The 31st edition of the African Basketball Championship, according to FIBA, yielded a social impact of 240,000 spectators.

Regarding the image and notoriety item, Angola received the maximum score of 5,000 points from the International Basketball Federation, surpassing the achievements of other countries that are much more developed in sports and economics.

In terms of media coverage, brand associations, online mentions, social networks and public perception, Angola received a score of 5 in the local content chapter, fundamentally because the entire organization was undertaken exclusively by Angolans.

For Rui Falcão, who answered questions such as school and community sports, construction, management and maintenance of infrastructure, professional sports and sports sponsorship, the data demonstrate the gains versus investment made in the organization of international competitions.

The governor also said that Angola could acquire similar software and that, at this moment, he would like to be able to quantify the gains from holding the Angola-Argentina game (0-2) on November 14th, at the 11 de Novembro stadium, as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of national independence.

“If these were the gains we had with the Afrobasket, one day we will know what we had with the game against Argentina. But anyway, we will continue with our purposes, we will continue to invest in our international credibility and the results will gradually appear,” he stressed.

The minister mentioned that after the successful holding of several international events, especially in this year of 2025, Angola has received invitations from International Federations to host World Championships, but asked for consideration in light of the objective reality and the economic situation.

“There are nine International Federations requesting that we host world championships here. So we have to be a little proud. We have to like our flag, our country, more,” he indicated. Data announced by the minister mentions international organizations; the last MMA World Championship, held in Europe, had 2 million views on social media.

The last African MMA Championship, held in Angola (Luanda), had 9.9 million views.

Subsequently, Angola was invited to host the world championship in 2026, facing competition from Brazil and the United States of America.

Recently, during the African Nautical Sports Championship, the president of the African Confederation of the sport invited Angola to host the World Championship in 2026.

João Costa, of São Tomé nationality, stated that in addition to being vast with more than 1000 km, Luanda Bay is suitable for world competitions.
