Africa-Press – Angola. The Ministry of Youth and Sports (MINJUD) considers that the death of the former chairman of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), Carlos Teixeira “Cagi”, on Monday (15), in Australia due to illness, leaves a void in Angolan sport.
In a ministerial note, Cagi is described as one of the greatest figures in national sports management who dedicated a large part of his life to building basketball in particular.
“An engineer by training, a rigorous manager and a visionary leader, Cagi belongs to a generation that helped build Angolan sport in difficult times, marked by a scarcity of resources, war and enormous challenges to the country’s affirmation,” reads the statement, which adds that the deceased did everything with intelligence, courage, patriotic sense and a deep love for Angola.
However, the ministry acknowledges that it was in basketball where he left an indelible mark.
Carlos Teixeira “Cagi” lived in Australia for the last fifteen years, and one of his last appearances in the country was when he was decorated by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, in the Peace and Development category, during the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of National Independence.
As a basketball player, he distinguished himself at the University Sports Club of Angola (CDUAN) in the 1960s and 70s.
It was during his tenure (1987-1996) that Angola won its first four consecutive titles with the senior men’s national team, specifically in 1989-1991, 1993, and 1995.
