Africa-Press – Angola. Six hundred and 69 unexploded explosive devices of various calibers were removed and destroyed in Malanje, in an area of two thousand 271 square meters, during the year 2023, by the Provincial Department of the National Demining Center (CND).
These are 60, 82 and 120 mm mortars, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, as well as various ammunition, removed in demining actions in the municipalities of Kiwaba Nzoji, Calandula, Cangandala, Malanje and Cacuso.
The information was provided to ANGOP today by the head of the Studies, Planning, Statistics and Quality Control Assurance section of the CND, Laurinda Manuel, stating that during the last year there was an accident with an anti-personnel mine in the town of Quissole, municipality of Malanje, which fatally killed a 21-year-old citizen.
The person in charge made it known during the reporting period, the CND also promoted refresher courses on humanitarian demining and demining techniques aimed at deminers, education campaigns on mine risk aimed at 17 thousand 535 people, in addition to carrying out a survey of 50 areas suspected mines in several locations in the province.
However, he pointed out the lack of mapping of areas mined during the period of the armed conflict, as being one of the main obstacles to demining activity in the province, along with the practice of collecting ferrous material, especially by minors, for sale.
Associated with such factors is the shortage of employees to meet the demand for demining tasks, with the institution having only 49 technicians.
