Africa-Press – Angola. President António Agostinho Neto was a shrewd and brilliant statesman, interpreter of the legitimate aspirations of the Angolan people, highlighting the permanent concern for the liberation of African peoples subjected to colonial oppression, an action that made him a man of international dimension, he highlighted this Sunday, in Luanda, the MPLA.

​According to a message on the occasion of September 17th, National Hero’s Day, the party in power states that Neto is one of the greatest figures in the country and beyond, of the 20th Century, and leader of the Armed Struggle that determined the proclamation of National Independence, on November 11, 1975.

​For this reason, the Political Bureau of the MPLA Central Committee urged Angolans to celebrate the date imbued with the permanent spirit of reflection around Neto’s memories and teachings, which are still current, serving as an inspiring anchor in design of policy measures to improve the lives of populations.

​He adds that Neto left a multidisciplinary legacy through which he helped to establish the social, political, cultural and humanist identity of Angolans, which must forever be remembered and honored, for its content, as well as the vision of the future, permanently updated​ .

“The MPLA maintains the conviction that Neto’s strategic and transversal thinking maintains the tendency to be the compass of Angolans who, with a true patriotic spirit, dedicate themselves to the most demanding tasks that contribute to the development of the nation, as a heritage colectivo” reaffirms the document.

On the other hand, he recognized that the socio-economic adversities that national citizens are currently facing are the result of endogenous and exogenous factors, calling on the nation’s living forces to, once again, elevate the sense of citizenship and patriotism in defense of Angola’s most noble interests.

He expressed his uncompromising willingness to “Work harder and communicate better”, based on the famous and eternal slogan, “the most important thing is to solve the People’s problems”, by continuing to guide the elaboration of policy measures and other actions , with the sole aim of improving the living conditions of the populations.

António Agostinho Neto was born in Icolo e Bengo, Luanda, on September 17, 1922 and died in Moscow, Russia, on September 10, 1979. In 1975 he proclaimed National Independence and became the first President of Angola.
