Africa-Press – Angola. The MPLA (Ruling Party) Politiburo expressed, on Tuesday (27) its deep sorrow and consternation over the death of Augusto Lopes Teixeira “Tutu”, who died of illness.
In a note of condolence, MPLA stated that the deceased politician, born in the municipality of Golungo Alto (Cuanza Norte Province) on Dec 9, 1938, joined the Angolan independence cause very early, first through political action and then through active participation in the Armed Struggle for National liberation.
A graduate in Engineering, Tutu held several positions within the MPLA and in the State apparatus.
He was Secretary of State for Industry and Energy in the 1975 transitional govt, as well as a member of the Central Committee elected at the first MPLA congress in Dec 1977.
He also served as president of the Angolan Olympic Committee (1979-1980), the first after independence, and was also rector of the Agostinho Neto University (1980-1981).
Augusto Texeira also served as Minister of Education (1981-1991).
At the time of his death, he was a member of the MPLA Council of Honor and a retired general.
On behalf of the militants, friends and supporters, the MPLA Central Committee’s Political Bureau bows before the deceased and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
