MPLA wants more active participation of the agricultural sector in food security

Africa-Press – Angola. The Specialty Committee of MPLA economists defended the need for more active participation of the family and business sectors in the agricultural sector, with a view to guaranteeing food security in the province, through increased production.

This measure involves bringing together Cooperatives and Peasant Associations in the province, towards production for food security and diversification of the national economy.

The Committee promoted a colloquium on the “Pillars for food security”, which, among other aspects, served to analyze the problem of agriculture in the province and seek to unite the class, with a view to finding financing mechanisms for agro-industrial projects for family and business farmers.

According to the first secretary of the Committee in Malanje, Lizete Gonga, the Colloquium took place following other initiatives that contribute to the economic stability of the province promoted by the body.

He highlighted the need for businesspeople in the business and family farming sectors to come together, as the most reliable mechanism for raising financing within the framework of the Executive’s policies, through the intermediation of the Angola Agro-livestock Association (AAPA).

The president of AAPA, Vanderley Ribeiro, called upon to discuss the topic under discussion, considered that the country has a considerable deficit in terms of food security, due to the lack of financing and some distance between agricultural entrepreneurs, a situation that must be overcome.

He explained that the country still has many challenges regarding food security, as there are imports of food products that should be produced on a large scale locally, although the Executive is working to empower the business community, so that it can improve levels productive.

Meanwhile, the director of the Provincial Office of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Carlos Chipoia, said there is a need to produce food in quality and quantities capable of satisfying the citizens’ diet, therefore, food security is not yet a reality in the province and in the country in general.

Food security arises from the local production capacity to satisfy citizens’ needs, ensuring that everyone has at least three quality meals/day.

The meeting took place under the motto “Agro-industrial development policies” and was attended by members of Cooperatives and Peasant Associations from the 14 municipalities in the province of Malanje.
