National Assembly Concludes Debate on Electoral Legislative Package

Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) concluded its discussion of the Electoral Legislative Package in specialized working committees on Thursday, after several political consultations to align ideas.

Today, debates focused on the Proposed Law Amending Law No. 12/12 of April 13 – Organic Law on the Functioning of the National Electoral Commission (CNE), initiated by the Executive, as well as the draft of the same law, put forward by the UNITA Parliamentary Group.

Speaking to the press at the end of the proceedings, MPLA deputy Milonga Bernardo said that one of the main new features introduced in the new law is the inclusion of up to three accredited national election observers who will now attend CNE plenary meetings.

He specified that observation will occur especially during the period from the start of the election campaign until the announcement of the final results.

According to the parliamentarian, the observers will be appointed from among themselves, in accordance with current legislation, and aim to strengthen the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.

He considered the debates a milestone for Angolan democracy, praising the environment of ongoing dialogue and institutional maturity.

“Today, once again, Angolans made history through their representatives. We moved from two initially conflicting views to consensus built on the republican spirit, always seeking the best solutions for the country,” he emphasized.

During the sessions, the deputies also debated the Proposal and the Bill Amending Law No. 8/15 of June 15, the Law on Unofficial Voter Registration.

The discussions were attended by the Minister of State and Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic, Adão de Almeida, among other aides to the Head of the Executive Branch.

A plenary session is scheduled for next week for the final overall vote on the electoral legislative package.
