Africa-Press – Angola. On Monday, in Luanda, American filmmaker Billy Woodberry described Mário Pinto de Andrade as a highly honest and intellectual nationalist on the scale of the African continent, who emerged from the Pan-Africanist movement.Speaking to journalists after the screening of the documentary entitled “Mário” yesterday at Shopping Fortaleza, the director said that the story of Mário Pinto de Andrade’s political activism, which he starred in in 1950, made him an admired intellectual at the time.

According to the American filmmaker, Mário Pinto de Andrade was an influential figure in all African countries that were under colonial rule and an admirable activist in Latin American and Asian countries.

The Angolan nationalist’s career, Billy Woodberry said, is fascinating and any filmmaker or researcher would be moved to study, create and report on the achievements of a legendary personality who left his mark on the 19th century and has repercussions today.

The American filmmaker stressed that all those interviewed in the documentary had some kind of relationship with Mário Pinto de Andrade, and stressed that they were not chosen at random, ensuring that they had a political, social and everyday relationship with the character.Billy Woodberry revealed that his first contact with the history of the Angolan nationalist occurred in 1971, in Cuba, when he read articles about the inspiring and interesting activism of Mário Pinto de Andrade, which motivated him to travel to Portugal in 2000, where he researched all the material until the documentary was made.

Mário Pinto de Andrade was born in 1928, in the province of Cuanza-Norte and died in London, in 1990, leaving behind two daughters. The documentary alluding to his political career, entitled “Mário”, is part of the 4th Edition of the DocLuanda International Film Festival, which ends tomorrow.
