Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan film “Nayola” recently won, in Spain, the prize for Best Film/Feature Film, at the film festival in the city of La Laguna, Tenerife.
According to this Thursday’s edition of Press, “Nayola” won one of the 21 categories of the 6th edition of the Quirino Ibero-American Animation Awards, in which 223 works from 18 countries competed.
Produced in 2022, the film portrays part of the civil war in the country, where three women who survived it set out to find the husband of one of them, however without success.
Filming took place in the Namib desert and in the province of Benguela, interacting with local people to learn about their cultures, experiences and customs.
The feature film shows the historical aspects that occupied and impeded the progress of the country, in times of armed conflict, as well as the great transformations that have been taking place in Angola.
“Nayola” involves almost 30 characters, and is a production that lasted about nine years, with Portugal providing one million and 500 thousand euros for the realization of the cinematographic project.
Budgeted at three million and 200 thousand euros, the film is the result of a conversation between the Portuguese director José Miguel Ribeiro, and the film producer Jorge António, based in Luanda, about a short story written by Agualusa and Mia Couto, called “The black box ”.
“Nayola”, the first feature film by Portuguese filmmaker, José Miguel Ribeiro, which, in June, was awarded in the category of best international animated feature film, at the Guadalajara Film Festival, in Mexico, is one of four Portuguese films selected for its 66th edition of the London Film Festival, which takes place from 5 to 16 October 2022.
This animation is a co-production of Portugal – Praça Filmes – with Belgium, France and the Netherlands and tells the story of three generations of women touched by the civil war in Angola. The screenplay is signed by Virgílio Almeida and was based on a play by José Eduardo Agualusa and Mia Couto.
Last April, “Nayola” was awarded at the Stuttgart International Animation Film Festival (ITFS 2023), in Germany, with the trophy for Best Animated Film.
