Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Literary and Cultural Association (ALCA), based in Lobito, Benguela province, will participate, from the 25th to the 30th of July, in an international poetry fair about the life and work of Agostinho Neto, in the Mozambican city of Xai Xai.

According to the FTAA coordinator, Efraim Chinguto, the activity is part of the festivities of the centenary of Agostinho Neto, the first President of the Republic of Angola.

In the same context, the launch of the project of a poetic and literary anthology is also planned, a roundtable on the theme: a three-dimensional look, in the academic-professional, political and literary perspective, as well as lectures in several schools, in the municipalities of the Lobito, Catumbela and Benguela.

Regarding the journey, sociologist Alberto Virgílio addressed the image of Agostinho Neto, characterizing him as an “icon and emblematic figure of Angola, Africa and the World”.

“He was always at the forefront, he knew how to bring the ideals of the Angolans to fruition and he advised his companions from other colonies, residing at the time, in Portugal, Angola and Congo Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo) to be engaged in the fight to the independence of their countries”, he stressed.

He defended that it was a time to reflect and introspect in order to fully explore the legacy left by him.

Joaquim Catchípia, a university student, recalled famous phrases such as “From Cabinda to Cunene, a single people, a single nation, whose effect was to unite the different peoples of Angola until today”, as well as “Angola is and will be, by its own will , firm trench of the revolution in Africa”, widely referenced in songs from the Angolan songbook.

In turn, José Filipe, another academic, made a point of arguing about his poems from the book “A Renúncia Impossível”, referring to their international dimension, since they are translated into English, Spanish, Russian and German.

António Agostinho Neto was born on the 17th of September 1922 in Icolo e Bengo, Caxito, province of Bengo. He was a doctor, writer, politician, President of the MPLA and in 1975 he became the first President of Angola until 1979, when he died in Moscow, Russia, due to illness, on 10 September.
