Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) foresees a new voluntary and organized repatriation of refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), settled in Lóvua, Lunda Norte province, in July this year.
The information was provided Tuesday by the head of the UNHCR office in Lunda Norte, Chrispus Tebid, during the act of World Refugee Day, stressing that an inquiry is taking place in the settlement to assess the real number of refugees who intend to return to the country. of origin and those who intend to stay.
He said that the repatriation process will be developed by the organization and the governments of Angola and the DRC.
On the other hand, he highlighted the support of the Angolan Government in the process of socio-economic reintegration of refugees.
In May 2017, an initial group of 35,000 DRC citizens arrived in Lunda Norte province, fleeing acts of violence in the Kassai area, a crisis that led to the declaration of an emergency situation.
Currently, ACUNUR controls 6,506 refugees in the Lóvua camp and 2,826 in the city of Dundo, the rest were repatriated in their country of origin.
