Africa-Press – Angola. The annual festival of the traditional drink Omahongo, in the municipality of Cuanhama (Cunene), constitutes an act of promotion and preservation of the cultural ties of the people of the region, said , Monday, Teodoro Mwavalulange.

The municipal director of Culture in Cuanhama was speaking on the sidelines of the 2025 edition of the Omahongo festival, held in the town of Embulunganga, having said that the event helps to reinforce the habits left by ancestors.

He said that the festival aims to awaken and preserve the cultural identity of the region, as well as transmit to new generations the importance of this initiative, which is accompanied by tales, songs, local folk dances and a banquet.

He said that in this space, citizens interact and connect as a way of contributing to the appreciation of tradition.

The meeting takes place mainly in the months of February and March, when this alcoholic drink extracted from the ripe fruit of the Ongongo is produced.

This is the first municipal edition of the festival, considering that in previous years it was held in communes and villages. To date, eight editions of the Omahongo festival have been held, five in the commune of Môngua and three in Ondjiva.

The Omahongo tree grows in the southwest African region, especially in the southern region of Angola and in the Republics of Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. Its fruits are used to make juice, cooking oil, alcoholic drinks such as Omahongo and Amarula liqueur.
