Africa-Press – Angola. More than one hundred and fifty thousand families in Uíge province will benefit from electricity within three years, following the electrification of 11 of its 23 municipalities, the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges announced.
The first phase of electrification of the 11 municipalities of Uíge began this Friday with the project’s commissioning, in a ceremony presided over by Minister João Baptista Borges, in the presence of the provincial governor, José Carvalho da Rocha.
The project has two phases, includes more than one thousand home connections in 23 municipalities and 44 communes, and will last 24 months. The works will be carried out by the companies Elecnor and Mitrelli. According to the minister, the municipalities of Ambuila, Bembe, Bungo, Damba, Dange-Quitexe, Mucaba, Púri, Songo, Vista-Alegre, Nsosso, and Lukunga will be included in the first phase.
He reported that nine electrical substations will be built to connect the municipalities via high-voltage power systems, starting in Kapanda and reaching the municipality of Maquela do Zombo.
He noted that these substations will be built in several municipalities with high-voltage power lines, allowing all municipalities to benefit from clean energy from the Middle Kwanza River.
He noted that the energy will be cheaper and will reach the most remote areas of the province.
He said the project will generate hundreds of jobs and meet one of the greatest expectations of young people.
He noted that the country has an energy access rate of approximately 48 percent, emphasizing that this figure is expected to exceed by 2027.
He announced that, in the coming days, similar projects will be launched in the provinces of Huambo and Kwanza-Sul, among others.
In turn, the governor of Uíge, José Carvalho da Rocha, praised the launch of the project, as it will contribute to harnessing the region’s agricultural and mining potential, as well as to the academic training of young people.
Participating in the ceremony were the Secretary of State for Energy and Water, António Belsa Rodrigues; the National Director of Water, Elsa Ramos; vice-governors; members of the government; members of the National Assembly; traditional and religious authorities; municipal administrators; judicial magistrates and public prosecutors; and other guests.
