Africa-Press – Angola. The National Demining Center (CND) cleared at least 22.7 million square meters of land of mines in Huambo province in 2025, which is an increase of 18,417,638 devices compared to 2024, the head of the CND department Castro Kapanda said Tuesday.

Kapanda said the number of cleared mine areas increased due to the greater incidence of work on power transmission lines, underlining the clearing tasks on the lines from the Dango substation (Huambo) to the Lomaum electrical substation, Benguela, over a distance of 159 kilometers, as well as the Gove dam in this region, passing through the municipalities of Chipindo, Cuvango and Jamba, in Huíla province.

The official said that, in 2025, six anti-personnel mines, three anti-tank mines, 747 unexploded explosive devices, 2,041 various munitions, and 29,771 pieces of metal were destroyed.

Castro Kapanda recalled that four mine accidents were recorded, resulting in one death and six injuries, while the others involved were unharmed, highlighting the implementation of the mine risk education campaign, which resulted in raising awareness among 6,845 people, to reduce the risk of accidents in communities.

He said the center currently has cataloged 11 suspected mine areas, located in the municipalities of Bailundo, Bimbe, Chicala-Cholohanga, and Mungo, which are awaiting validation from the National Mine Action Agency for demining work.

The province of Huambo, with an area of 35,771 square kilometers, where 2,691,902 inhabitants live, distributed across 17 municipalities, was once considered one of the regions with the most areas suspected of having mines, due to the armed conflict that occurred in the country.
