Africa-Press – Angola. Agricultural production for the food self-sufficiency of the penal population constitutes the focus of action of the new director of the Huambo Penitentiary Service, prison commissioner José Celestino, presented this Tuesday to the staff of the Interior Delegation.

The prison commissioner said that agricultural production, with the involvement of the inmates themselves and the staff, who are knowledgeable in the matter, will continue to deserve special attention from the institution, with a view to improving the diet of citizens detained and sentenced in the local district..

It is recalled that in the 2022/2023 agricultural season, the Huambo Prison Service harvested 176 tons of various products, with emphasis on corn and vegetables, produced in an area of ​​120 hectares of land, in the Cambiote and Sambo fields.

The prison official also pointed out the strengthening of human and institutional relations, for better rehabilitation of the penal population and the redoubling of security levels in the penitentiary establishment, located in the Cambiote neighborhood, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo, as the main goals.

The new director replaced prison commissioner Chinhama Samuel Jamba, transferred to perform the same functions in Malange province.

In turn, the inspector general of the Penitentiary Service, prison commissioner Noé de Nascimento, explained that the movement of staff aims to continue the success that the national management expects to achieve in the agricultural and livestock projects being developed in these regions of the country.

Therefore, he called for greater discipline, commitment and dedication, with a view to improving the well-being of the penal population, which involves reversing the current total dependence on the General State Budget (OGE) to meet their needs.

The Penitentiary Service is the central executive body of the Ministry of the Interior, which is responsible for carrying out measures depriving citizens of liberty, determined by the competent judicial authorities, applying policies for the rehabilitation and social reintegration of prisoners, and monitoring compliance with preventive detention. , as well as the deadlines for parole.
