Africa-Press – Angola. The Petro de Luanda women’s senior handball team will be looking for their second win in the preliminary round of the 45th edition of the Champions Clubs’ Cup, when they face hosts US Nouasser at 7pm. The game is part of the second round of Group C, which also features a clash between Peacoks from Nigeria and Andre Nziko from Cameroon. The Angolan team’s performance in the first round resulted in the best defense, conceding 12 goals, and the best attack of the competition, scoring 40 goals, in the victory over the Nigerian team Peacocks.
Today, despite the home advantage, the Moroccans have no chance of stopping Luís Chaves’ team, given the difference in potential. Nouasser’s team lost in the first round to Andre Nziko’s Cameroonians by 16-20, thus showing that they are below the performances of the continental runners-up.
It is therefore a game for Luís Chaves to train the team, to assess their performance in the different phases for the games that are expected to be more difficult. Petro de Luanda has been chasing a European Cup trophy for eight seasons. The last victory was in Marrakesh, Morocco, in the 2013 competition.
Yesterday, 1.o de Agosto, another Angolan representative, faced Abidjan HBC in the second game, after starting the title defense with a 26-28 defeat against Sfaxien from Tunisia. The match was marked by the expulsion of two athletes from the champion club.
This is the first defeat of an Angolan team in the competition, at the hands of one from another country in several years. The last time a national representative was defeated in these conditions was in 1996, when Petro de Luanda and ASA finished in third and fourth place.
