PGR defends new prison in Lunda-Norte

Africa-Press – Angola. The need to build a new prison in the municipality of Cuango, to serve the southern region of Lunda-Norte and relieve the Cacanda chain, was defended this Thursday by the new deputy attorney general of that district, João Constantino.

The province of Lunda-Norte, with more than one million inhabitants, distributed across ten municipalities, has only one prison establishment, in Chitato, with the capacity to house 480 inmates.

Currently, the prison is overcrowded by more than 50 inmates.

When speaking during his presentation, João Constantino, highlighted that the construction of a prison establishment in Cuango, where there is already a District Court, will prevent the municipalities of Xá-muteba, Capenda Camulemba, Caungula and Cuilo from sending inmates to Cacanda.

Press knows that there is a project by the Ministry of the Interior for the construction of a prison in Cuango, awaiting financing.

The magistrate who replaces Mário da Gama, who has been in charge of the PGR/Lunda-Norte since 2021, now transferred to the Court of Appeal, in the province of Benguela,

On the other hand, he said that his priority will be, in joint action with the courts, to resolve excessive preventive detention and the issue of detainees with expired sentences.

He also highlighted as a priority the continuous training of magistrates, speeding up processes and raising the legal culture of citizens.

He announced that the province will be reinforced with ten new public prosecutors, who will join the current 11, which will allow the expansion of PGR services in the ten municipalities.
