Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, authorized the disbursement of 203.7 million North American dollars (USD) for the requalification of the main districts of the city of Huambo, seat of the province with the same name.

According to Presidential Order No. 149/23, dated 26 June, the amount is also intended for the construction of structural roads with different levels of degradation, in a total length of 148 kilometres.

In addition to authorizing the expenditure, the opening of the simplified contracting procedure is also formalised, based on the material criteria, for reasons of external financing, for the award of the work contract and for the inspection in the amount of 2.9 billion Kwanzas , including Value Added Tax (VAT).

The Minister of Public Works, Urbanism and Housing is delegated the competence, with the power to sub-delegate, to practice all the acts of approval of the parts of the procedure, as well as the verification of their validity and legality, including the celebration and signature of the respective contracts.

Brief history of the city of Huambo

Considered, in the past, the life city of Angola, the name of the city is due to the expert hunter Wambo Kalunga, from the region of Seles, province of Cuanza Sul, who went to settle, in the 15th century, in the territory of Caála, in this province, in the areas of Ussombo, Makolo and Kondombe.

Named Nova Lisboa in 1928, it regained its previous name after independence in 1975.

The city of Huambo was a center of economic, industrial and agricultural development and a center of excellence in the academic field, namely in the area of ​​agricultural and veterinary research.

The municipality of Huambo, one of 11 in the province of the same name, has an estimated population of 900,000 inhabitants, distributed in three communes (Calima, Chipipa and Sede, the latter with six sectors).
