Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, paid homage, sunday, to the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Assunção dos Anjos, who died on the 12th of this month, in Madrid, Spain, due to illness.
At the Army Command, in Luanda, where the mortal remains were laid, the Angolan Head of State laid a wreath next to the urn and offered condolences to the family of the deceased.
In the book of condolences, João Lourenço highlighted the figure of Assunção dos Anjos, recalling that he performed relevant functions as a member of the central administration of the State in Angola and abroad, always with recognized zeal, sense of duty and remarkable competence.
“In this moment of sadness, I praise his qualities as a man of fine treatment and possessor of vast culture, who always stood out for the zealous way in which he carried out his responsibilities”, wrote President João Lourenço.
In the book of condolences, the Angolan statesman also highlighted the
valuable contribution that the ambassador made to Angolan diplomacy.
They also paid tribute to the former minister, the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa, the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, as well as members and representatives of other sovereign bodies.
Assunção dos Anjos was a politician and diplomat, having served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2008 to 2010.
During his diplomatic career, he also served as director for Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The deceased was responsible for the offices of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Planning and the then President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, from 1979 to 1993.
He was also Angola’s ambassador to Spain, France and Portugal.
In 2010 he was replaced by Georges Rebelo Chikoti as Minister of Foreign Affairs and, later, appointed Presidential Advisor.
The mortal remains of Assunção dos Anjos now rest in the Alto das Cruzes cemetery, in Luanda.
