Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, left Kinshasa, in the middle of the afternoon this Saturday, after witnessing the inauguration of Félix Tshisekedi, for a second term, in the Mártires stadium packed with more than one hundred thousand people.
At the ceremony, Félix Tshisekedi swore allegiance to the homeland, respect for the constitution and the law, defend independence, and promote the unity of the Congolese people.
He included in his oath the promotion of development and the well-being of the population, the observance of human rights and he promised to be a servant of the people.
In his first speech, Felix Tshisekedi proposes to work for a stronger, more united and prosperous DRC, for democracy and social progress.
He urged national cohesion and the fight against destabilizing and terrorist forces and all forms of discrimination and division that harm the country’s development.
Félix Tshisekedi, who ran for the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party, was re-elected for another five years in the presidential elections on 20 December last, with 73.34% of the votes, according to data from the Congolese Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
He came to power in January 2019 after winning the elections on January 30, 2018, succeeding Joseph Kabila.
The 2018 election is considered historic because it was the first time in the history of the country, independent of Belgium since 1960, that a peaceful political transition occurred, through right and universal suffrage, unlike previous elections through coups d’état or for the overthrow of established power.
The Angolan statesman, as president of CIRGL and SADC, has paid special attention to issues related to political and military stability in the DRC with initiatives to pacify the eastern region and normalize relations with neighboring Rwanda.
He managed to get the Democratic Congolese and Rwandan Presidents, Paul Kagame, to resolve a border dispute between Catuna and Gatuna.
João Lourenço mediated at a Tripartite summit between Angola, the DRC and Rwanda, the adoption of the Roadmap for the Pacification of the Eastern Region of the DRC, an agreement known as the L Roadmap wanda.
