Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President and Chairperson of the African Union, João Lourenço, highlighted, on Thursday, the historical and current contribution of African women to the construction of a peaceful, prosperous, and developed Africa.

In a message released on the occasion of the African Women’s Day celebrations, the Head of State recalled that the date arose from the 1962 Conference of African Women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a milestone in raising women’s awareness of their decisive role in Africa’s progress.

João Lourenço emphasized that the anniversary commemorates “courageous women who distinguished themselves through their achievements in the cause of independence for African countries, the fight against apartheid, and numerous battles to restore the dignity of the continent’s people.”

According to the President, current times unequivocally demonstrate the success of African women’s struggle for full inclusion in the political, social, and economic life of their countries, and they are now considered structural pillars in nation-building.

“I cannot fail to recognize and praise your role as mothers and educators in the formation of women and men who are heirs to the African values of generosity, respect, and solidarity, fundamental to building an inclusive and harmonious continent,” he stated.

The Head of State reaffirmed the commitment of political, business, and social leaders to the implementation of policies and actions that irreversibly ensure the full emancipation of African women.

The message concludes with a call to celebrate African women as essential agents of peace and development.
