Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, on Thursday in Luanda expressed his deep sadness and dismay upon learning of the death of João Luís Neto “Xietu”, who died of illness at the age of 81 on the 24th this month, in the capital of the country.

João Luís Neto “Xietu”, who was a retired Army general, was the first Chief of the General Staff of the former People’s Armed Forces for Angola’s Liberation (FAPLA).

“It is with sadness that we continue to see some of the most courageous nationalists and fighters for the Independence and freedom of the Angolan people”, reads the message of condolences.

The document highlights that General Xietu, joined the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) in the late 1960s and actively collaborated in the preparations for the heroic 4th of February, which marks the beginning of the Armed Struggle for National Liberation.

It reveals that he joined the MPLA guerrilla force and rose to the highest military rank, that of Army General, on his own merit.

João Lourenço’s condolence message highlights that General Xietu was honoured and awarded medals of the highest value during his brilliant career in recognition of his achievements.

It emphasises that the Angolan nation has lost one of its best sons, concluding with sincere condolences to the bereaved family, his friends and his war comrades.
