Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan President and Chair of the African Union, João Lourenço, on Monday called on the world leaders for the rescue of the multilateralism for the good of humanity.
The statesman made the appeal at the opening of the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, which brings together heads of state, institutional leaders and delegations from both continents in the Angolan capital.
In his speech, João Lourenço warned of the growing deterioration of security in several regions of the world.
He referred to the war in Ukraine, which has been causing thousands of deaths for almost four years, displaced millions and destroyed essential infrastructure, and highlighted that European instability represents “a major security challenge” for the European Union.
The African leader also highlighted the crises affecting the continent, citing the unconstitutional changes of power in West Africa and Madagascar, the spread of terrorism in the Sahel, Somalia and Mozambique, as well as the conflicts in Sudan and the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he warned that there is a “danger of secession” if effective measures are not taken to establish lasting peace.
João Lourenço also addressed the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with emphasis on the situation in the Gaza Strip, which, according to him, represents a threat to regional stability.
The President welcomed previous diplomatic efforts that sought to pave the way for the creation of the State of Palestine, in accordance with United Nations resolutions.
He criticized the violation of fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and considered that global security has been put at risk by unilateral actions by great powers, including permanent members of the Security Council, which “deauthorize the very body to which they belong”.
For João Lourenço, only the strengthening of multilateralism based on international legality can reverse this scenario.
