Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, announced, this Wednesday, in Luanda, the start, next year, of a Green Hydrogen exploration project in the town of Barra do Dande, Bengo province.
When speaking at the Panel “Young people, actors in promoting the culture of peace and social transformations on the continent/High Level Dialogue”, within the scope of the 3rd Luanda Biennale, the Head of State explained that the project will be developed by Sonangol, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas and by a German company.
According to the President, who was responding to a concern about Angola’s contribution to reducing polluting gases, the objective is to serve the domestic market and export green energy to Europe and other consumers around the world.
In his approach, João Lourenço said that, with the same purpose, Angola will sign, at the COP 28 Summit, taking place this month in Dubai, an initiative that exists on the need to decarbonize oil and gas.
He said that, in addition to this UN initiative, there are others from international institutions that Angola will join, so that its oil and gas industry will, in the near future, have the capacity to measure carbon hydroxide emissions and reduce the as possible, carbon dioxide and methane gas emissions.
“These are the concrete measures that Angola is taking to contribute to the strategy against polluting gas emissions”, he highlighted.
Regarding energy production in Angola, the Head of State said that the country is committed to the fight against climate change and participates in all struggles within the scope of the COP.
To this end, he said, he has been working to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, using less and less fuel from thermal power plants to produce electricity.
He said that the country has made a large investment in the construction of Hydroelectric Power Plants and highlighted three large dams built around the Baixo Cuanza Basin.
“This energy is allowing us to reduce the use of thermal energy production plants. We have a capacity of around six thousand gigawatts, but we are using just over half. We have investments to make in transporting this energy to the south and east of the country , after the north and center”, he said.
According to the Angolan President, the country wants to place its surplus energy in the SADC network, which already exists and works.
“Our energy matrix has around 65/67 percent of the energy supplied from clean energy, from the plants I mentioned and from solar parks that are in operation in some parts of the country, Benguela, Namibe”, he declared.
He recalled that a few days ago, a large project was launched to power the communes of the provinces of Malanje, Lunda Norte, Moxico and Bié, with a large solar energy project being financed by Exim Bank, which will improve energy distribution in the south of Angola.
