Africa-Press – Angola. The focus on promoting agricultural activity is one of the priorities this year for the Prison Services in Cuanza Sul province, in order to improve the diet of inmates and staff working at the institution.

The information was provided, this Monday, in the city of Sumbe, by the provincial director of Prison Services, Abraão Domingos, adding that the institution has 1,089 hectares of arable land for agricultural cultivation in the municipalities of Sumbe and Libolo, as well as in the cities of Gabela (Amboim) and Wacu-Kungo (Cela).

According to the official, who was speaking at the provincial act alluding to the 44th anniversary of the Prison Services, which is being celebrated yesterday, his department will continue to invest in improving social assistance for the penal population, as well as in the academic and professional training of inmates.

In this sense, he defended the construction, at the level of the two prisons in the province, of arts and crafts pavilions, with a view to technically and professionally benefiting the inmates.

On the other hand, he considered the overcrowding registered in the Sumbe prison to be worrying.

Built in the 1960s to house 600 inmates, the penitentiary currently controls 1,163 prisoners.

“We believe that the situation of overcrowding can be overcome with the entry into operation of the Cassosso penitentiary, in the municipality of Cela. With the capacity to accommodate two thousand prisoners, the works are completed, but due to lack of water and electricity it was not inaugurated”, he lamented.

He encouraged the staff to continue working with zeal and dedication, contributing to the rehabilitation, rehabilitation and reintegration of men who are in conflict with the law, striving for the fulfillment of human rights.

Under the motto “A 44-year Penitentiary Service committed to the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners, consolidating prison production”, the deputy governor of Cuanza Sul for the political, economic and social sector, Emília Tchinawalile, members of the Government, representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and Prison Services, among other guests.

The Cuanza Sul Penitentiary Services control 1,163 inmates, 653 of whom are convicted and 510 are in pre-trial detention.
