Africa-Press – Angola. The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Electricity Production Company (PRODEL), Pedro Afonso, announced Tuesday, the construction of a 400-megawatt power plant to boost electrification in the province of Malanje.
Without giving dates or funding, the official explained that this measure aims to diversify energy sources, as Malanje only has two water sources (dams) and one thermal source (generator groups), in addition to serving to prevent energy production losses in the event of of drought.
Speaking to the press on the occasion of a visit to the Capapa power plant, in this city, Pedro Afonso said that in the event of water failure, given possible climate changes in the future, the Executive decided to invest in the production of photovoltaic energy, hence the emergence of this power plant.
He made it known that the project also includes the expansion of the network to 11 of the 14 municipalities in the province, with the exception of Cacuso, Calandula and Cangandala, the latter already benefiting from public and domestic connections.
He reiterated the installation of substations already underway in the municipalities of Mucari and Kiwaba Nzoji, within the scope of a phased electrification project in the province, which is expected to reach the municipal seats in the medium term.
On the other hand, PRODEL’s PCA recognized Malanje’s energy production capacity for the interconnected national grid, essentially through the Laúca and Capanda dams.
Pedro Afonso’s visit to PRODEL aimed at introducing the new members of the Board of Directors to the company’s employees, as well as assessing the functional status of the equipment.
