Africa-Press – Angola. Angola participated, this Wednesday, in Gaborone, in a meeting of the Pre-Electoral Goodwill Assessment Mission of the SADC Electoral Consultative Council (SEAC) to Botswana, within the framework of the general elections next October, in this African country Southern.

Angola was represented at the meeting by the ambassador to Botswana and special representative to SADC, Beatriz Morais, alongside diplomatic emissaries from the other member states of the regional organization, says a note this Wednesday, in Luanda.

The meeting was chaired by Ticheme Dlamini, one of the members of SEAC, also included by the representative of Lesotho, Limakatso Mokhothu, and by officials from the SADC Secretariat assigned to the Directorate of the Organ for Politics, Defense and Security of the regional organization.

The heads of the diplomatic missions of Zimbabwe and Zambia were also present, as well as other representatives from Botswana, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Africa.

On the occasion, Ticheme Dlamini recalled that the meeting was held in accordance with election observation practices in SADC Member States and the revised principles and guidelines on the conduct of democratic elections in SADC.

Such principles and guidelines envisage SEAC carrying out a Pre-Election Goodwill Assessment Mission to a Member State hoping to hold general elections, he said.

He added that Wednesday’s meeting is important, considering the need to obtain information or opinions on the context or state of organization of the next general elections in Botswana.

He explained that another purpose of the meeting was to identify challenges to take into account in the process, to submit an “exhaustive report” for consideration by the Body for Cooperation in the Areas of Politics, Defense and Security.

In her speech, the Angolan ambassador recalled that, during the general elections held in Botswana, in 2019, the Diplomatic Missions accredited in the Observation Mission.

Regarding the political environment in Botswana, Ambassador Beatriz Morais declared that, similar to what happened in the 2019 electoral election, the political climate in Botswana “is peaceful”.
