Africa-Press – Angola. One hundred and 21 sappers from the province of Lunda-Sul finished training on techniques for removing explosive devices, promoted by the National Demining Center (CND), on Friday in Saurimo.
The nine-day training aimed to increase the knowledge and skills of demining specialists, for better effectiveness in removing explosive devices of various types.
The event analyzed topics such as “Use of GPS and compass”, “Methods of determining scale”, “Elaboration of a sketch of a minefield”, “Actions to discover a mine”, “Details of the use of protective equipment personnel”, among others.
When speaking at the closing ceremony, the head of the CND department in Lunda-Sul, Fidel Dumba, said that the Angolan authorities made a commitment to the international community to demine all known mined areas.
The official highlighted that the country’s numerous challenges, aligned with the 2024 agenda, require the need to intensify and apply all techniques to define and remove any presence, suspicion and restrictions imposed by mine contamination.
Therefore, he recognized the efforts that the Executive and partners have made in the country’s demining process, with encouraging results, despite the constraints, especially financial ones.
Regarding training, Fidel Dumba made it known that the training of technicians aims to ensure greater dynamism and productivity in the missions carried out by the CND in Lunda-Sul, as well as providing participants with basic and fundamental knowledge for better professional performance in actions against mines..
In turn, the director of the Provincial Office for Social Action, Family and Gender Equality, Luísa Martins, highlighted the commitment and determination of the government and partners’ commitment to freeing the mined areas.
He also defended the need for continuous training of personnel assigned to demining, in order to improve the performance of their activities.
In 2023, the CND in Lunda Sul carried out specific actions, as a result of complaints from citizens, which resulted in the removal of 79 unexploded explosive devices, including mortar buzz, RPG7, grenades and small ammunition.
During the period in question, the CND carried out awareness-raising work in the province’s communities, which reached around 828 people, including men, women and children.
