Africa-Press – Angola. The improvement of the physical and technical aspects dominate Monday, the training session of the national basketball team B, which is being prepared in anticipation of the second edition of AFROCAN 2023, from 8 to 16 July, in Benguela.

The national coach B, Aníbal Moreira, said that in the morning the group worked on the physical aspect.

In the afternoon, in the city of Lobito, he will improve aspects of the field, with emphasis on short and long distance launches (two and three points).

According to the coach, the aim is to provide athletes with greater quality and capacity so that they can also be in the main team in the near future.

“We already came from a preparation of about 10 days in Luanda. We are just continuing, so we hope that the 12 athletes, at the time of the competition, will be ready to represent the country”, he said.

The selection is at an acceptable level knowing that there is still a not very long margin because the competition is already on the 8th of July, but in this short period of time, I hope that the selection grows and manages to be at its best in the competition.

He made it known that the selection only has two or three players with some experience in senior competitions at FIBA level.

In this way, he referred, he hopes that the other athletes manage to be focused and can dignify the name of Angola in this competition at African level.

He pointed out as the only constraint the fact that they were doing a gym in Benguela and later had to travel to Lobito (30 km away), to train the field throws, due to works that are being carried out at the Arena Acácias Rubras.

“But I think it won’t affect the group’s preparation much, because what is wanted is the improvement of the technical and physical capacity of these players”, he added.

As for AFROCAN 2023, he said that the teams that qualified for the World Cup are already starting at a certain disadvantage, as they will not be able to perform at their best. The rule of this competition is that players participating in the Afrocan cannot be in the World Cup and vice versa.

He recalled that 23 players were called for the world campaign and those who are here have their value and are still young, aged between 20 and 23 years old, with only one aged 30.

On the occasion, he informed that yesterday, in principle, one more athlete leaves and at the end of the week two or three more and so on consecutively, because what is intended is to define, in a minimum of 12 to 13 days, the 12 who will participate in the competition African.

In this second edition of AFROCAN, Angola seeks to improve its third position in 2019, in Mali, an edition conquered by the Democratic Republic of Congo.

AFROCAN is a recent competition organized by FIBA-Africa for national teams from the African continent, which takes place every four years. It was created to promote and develop African basketball.
