The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media (MINTTICS), Mario Oliveira, reaffirmed Monday in Luanda the government’s commitment to align itself with the vision of the National Bank of Angola (BNA) in guaranteeing a modern, secure, inclusive payment system that serves the national economy.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2nd cycle of conferences on ‘Alternative Payment Instruments’, held by the BNA, the minister said the country has made significant strides in modernizing technological and telecommunications infrastructures, with a direct impact on the expansion of digital banking services, such as the ATM network, Express and kwik payment system.
According to the minister, the growth of these services and applications is proof that citizens’ trust in digital media is being consolidated, but for this trust to be maintained and consolidated, it is imperative that the support infrastructures keep up with the trends, becoming increasingly solid, resilient and with national coverage,’ the minister said.
National Connectivity, Expansion of the National Terrestrial Fiber Optic Network, which already connects the country’s provincial capitals and main municipalities, reduced the coverage deficit by 40 percent in recent years.
Connection to the International Submarine Fiber Optic Cable Network, via SAT-3, SAX and WAX, which guarantees competitive latencies in the South Atlantic, are the three strategic pillars under the responsibility and management of MINTTICS.
The minister pointed to the Satellite Capacity, with AngoSAT-2, which has been operational since the beginning of 2024 and allows for rapid national coverage, enabling terminal and ATM captivation in remote areas, as well as the new Low Orbit Satellite Gateway, extending the coverage of digital services throughout the country.
The conference was attended by the governor of the BNA, Manuel Tiago Dias, national and international experts linked to central banks, as well as representatives of public and private institutions, the board of supervisors of the financial system, banking and non-banking financial institutions, business associations, academics, entrepreneurs and traders.
The aim of the event was to discuss the evolution of the electronic payment instruments and means available in the Angolan Payment System (SPA). At the event, diplomas of merit were awarded to financial institutions, as well as gifts to representatives of greengrocers, taxi drivers, shopkeepers and motorbike taxi drivers.
