Africa-Press – Angola. Theater makers in the province of Bengo want more spaces, support and incentives, to take the scenic art out of the lethargy in which it finds itself.

The municipality of Dande only has the Caxito cine theater and the music and performing arts training center (Cefomac), while in the other municipalities (five) theater is done in improvised places.

In an interview on the occasion of World Theater Day, some directors of theater groups considered that the creation of a provincial association and a provincial theater prize could help to improve the current situation of art in the region.

Lourenço Luís Adão Kimbumbata, member of the theater project Ana Ndanji, said that theater in the province is moving at a slow pace, as there are no concert halls, in addition to the weak organization of the groups.

He suggested the creation of a provincial prize for culture and arts that would help to boost theater groups (and beyond) in the six municipalities of the province.

The official asked show promoters to include theater in their schedules so that art can gain greater prominence.

Orlando Congo, from the Sementes de Artes group, is of the opinion that a profound reflection should be made on the situation of theater in the province, which has seen better days.

He recalled that between 2020 and 2022, three theater festivals were held in Bengo in the municipalities of Ambriz, Bula Atumba and Dande, which enabled exchanges between the various groups.

In his opinion, the Cefomac (musical training and performing arts center) should be used by theater groups to improve their performance and organisation.

“We already had a dynamic core and several installation commissions, but the lack of consensus on the leadership of the association made the creation of that association unfeasible”, he explained.

In Bengo there are more than 20 theater groups, most of which are concentrated in Caxito, in the municipality of Dande.

Of this number, only six are active – Novos Horizontes, Ana Ndanji project, Sementes de ́artes, Prodarte, Mensageiros de Caxito and Caminheiros Alegres.

March 27, International Theater Day, was established in 1961, in Vienna (Austria), by the International Theater Institute (ITI).
