Africa-Press – Angola. Twelve athletes compete from Friday, until the 24th of this month, the provincial absolute men’s individual chess championship, promoted by the local Association of the sport.
The winner of the competition will participate in the National Championship, taking place from the 9th to the 17th of April, in the province of Namibe.
At the opening of the event, the head of the Sports Department of the Provincial Office for Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, Neves Vunge, highlighted the importance of competition in the expansion of “sport science” in the region.
He recognized the difficulties that the Provincial Chess Association has been facing and guaranteed that the Cabinet will continue to make efforts, with a view to the development of the modality.
In turn, the president of the Provincial Chess Association, Nelson Costa, said that despite the difficulties the organization faces in the financial and infrastructural domains, the association has taken on the challenge of making the sport popular, with a view to forging athletes.
Rovi dos Santos was the champion of the last edition of the Provincial Chess Championship, but will not defend the title for personal reasons.
