Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, regretted, this Friday, the death of the former President of the Republic, José Eduardo dos Santos, which took place in Spain, Barcelona, ​​victim of a prolonged illness.

In a statement released this afternoon by his deputy spokesman, António Guterres addresses his deepest condolences to the family of José Eduardo dos Santos, the Government and the people of Angola.

The UN Secretary General recalls the former Head of State as a member of the MPLA “who participated in the struggle that led the country to independence, and as President of Angola he led the country by signing the peace agreement that ended the civil war in 2002”.

According to António Guterres, during his term, Angola became an important regional and international partner and defender of multilateralism.

Today, members of the Security Council observed a minute of silence in honor of the death of former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos, at the request of Brazil, the country that presides over the Security Council in July.
