Unita Calls for Urgent Debate on Social Upheaval

Africa-Press – Angola. The UNITA Parliamentary Group will request an “urgent” debate in the National Assembly on the underlying causes of the serious political, economic and social crisis the country is experiencing, which the taxi drivers’ strike has once again clearly demonstrated.

In a statement released this Friday, 01, following the social upheavals that have occurred throughout the country, with emphasis on the provinces of Luanda, Icolo and Bengo, Benguela, Huambo, Huíla, Lunda Norte and Malanje, the UNITA Parliamentary Group regrets the situation characterized by “extreme violence, destruction of property, summary executions and indiscriminate arrests”.

According to the statement sent to Novo Jornal, the UNITA Parliamentary Group considers it “unacceptable that the National Police, trained to ensure and guarantee public order and with the capacity to control social upheavals in times of serious disturbances, apparently has orders to shoot to kill without mercy.”

“While it is important to arrest citizens involved in looting, it is unacceptable that police officers who kill indiscriminately, violating constitutional rights, are not arrested and held accountable under the law,” the statement said, arguing that “life is inviolable and has the same value for all citizens.

“At a time of serious crisis, society expects from government officials and representatives words of moderation, conciliation, and above all public policy measures to resolve conflicts long predicted by analysts of recognized public reputation and religious entities,” the statement said.

According to the document, the current situation requires the National Assembly to take a public stance on the commitment its deputies made to faithfully represent the Angolan people, rather than defending the strategies of parties, groups, or individuals.

In the opinion of the UNITA Parliamentary Group, the National Assembly cannot remain silent in the face of the gravity of the situation and its tendency to spread to other provinces.

“The debate in the National Assembly is urgent, relevant, important and necessary so that the representatives of the Angolan people in the House of Laws can convey a message of state unity, defense of political stability and a firm stance in condemning the terror and fear that they seek to instill in society,” the note highlights.

For the UNITA Parliamentary Group, the National Assembly cannot act outside the clamor of society and national expectations, therefore, it considers it essential and urgent to reform the State, institutionalize Local Authorities and approve fair laws, without which there will be no effective citizen participation in the management of local interests of communities nor social development that is intended to be inclusive.
