UNITA Denies Suspension of Deputies

Africa-Press – Angola. The UNITA Parliamentary Group denied this Monday information that advanced the alleged suspension of five deputies, by the National Assembly, from the Angolan parliament.

The measure was reportedly motivated by alleged irregularities committed during inspections of public institutions.

The Institutional Communications department of the National Assembly denied to Polígrafo África the veracity of the information, clarifying that the President of the National Assembly does not have the legal power to suspend deputies.

According to the Organic Law that approves the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, this prerogative belongs exclusively to the Plenary of the Assembly, and any disciplinary measure involving deputies requires deliberation by their peers.

It is also important to note that, after the announcement by the President of the Assembly, the inspection visits by UNITA deputies ceased, and there is no record of any formal deliberation or sanction applied by Parliament.

It should be recalled, however, that, according to Novo Jornal, last week, UNITA deputies were notified by the 9th Committee on Mandates, Ethics and Parliamentary Decorum to provide clarifications, following a visit to the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL), carried out after a trip to the Central Morgue of Luanda, both carried out without prior authorization from the president of the National Assembly.

We therefore conclude that the claim that Carolina Cerqueira suspended five UNITA deputies is false. Not only has the information been denied by official sources and by UNITA itself, but there is no legal framework that allows the President of the National Assembly to unilaterally suspend deputies.
