The Education sector and the public higher education subsystem should have a higher share of the General State Budget (OGE), not only a decent salary for teachers, but also to take care of issues related to scientific research, he defended, Friday. fair(4), in Luanda, the vice-president of the Parliamentary Group of UNITA, Mihaela Webba.

The deputy, who was speaking to the press after the meeting held by the Parliamentary Group of UNITA with the Union of Public Higher Education Teachers, appealed to the Angolan Executive’s common sense to resolve these issues, stating that this year the OGE will have a budget of 11 billion dollars.

“And, therefore, there are conditions, because the President of the Republic had said that this year will be a surplus, which means that what university professors are demanding is possible to be fulfilled”, he considered, adding that this is a matter to be brought to Parliament to be presented during the OGE discussion for 2023.

Mihaela Webba stressed that the treatment being given to teachers, especially those in public higher education, is not the most dignified and the claims presented, in terms of salaries, career progression, continuous training, funds for scientific research, as well as infrastructure concerns UNITA, because teachers are the support for the development of any society, they are the tools for all other professions.

The vice-president of the UNITA Parliamentary Group explained that the suspension of the teachers’ strike does not indicate that the problems are solved, but it demonstrates the common sense of those who are the teachers and do not want to harm the students.

“Angola will only develop if it effectively invests in the Education, Health and Agriculture sectors. Education comes first, because it conditions the other two development sectors”, he reinforced.

University education

The National Union of Higher Education Teachers (SINPES), through Eduardo Peres Alberto, secretary-general, clarified that it continues to defend the improvement of the quality of higher education in Angola. For him, education is the golden key for any nation that seeks development, so “only quality education can help the sustainable development of any nation, and above all in the context of competition between nations”.

Eduardo Alberto said that the visit of the Parliamentary Group of UNITA was fundamental, appealing to the National Assembly to take into account the purposes of the State and to create serious investments for the subsector of higher education.
