USA: Angola resumes negotiations with Boeing

Africa-Press – Angola. he Angolan Executive resumes, shortly, negotiations with the American multinational Boeing, aiming at the purchase of aircraft for Linhas Aéreas de Angola.

The fact was announced this Monday, in Washington, United States of America, by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, who did not refer to specific dates or the possible value of the contract.

According to the Head of State, who was speaking during a Business Round Table with US businessmen, on the sidelines of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, these are negotiations that had already started, but were suspended because of economic constraints.

“At the beginning of my mandate, we started negotiating with Boeing for the purchase of more aircraft, but, at the time, we encountered a constraint that was linked to debt limits. Angola’s public debt was very large”, he recalled.

According to the Angolan Head of State, at the time, the international financial institutions asked the Angolan authorities for caution, in the sense of not exceeding the limits of the public debt.

Once the issue was resolved, the President said there were conditions to return to negotiations with Boeing, with a view to purchasing new aircraft and renewing the fleet of the Angolan flag carrier (TAAG).

Currently, it is estimated that the fleet of the Angolan company is twenty-one aircraft, including six Dash 8-Q400 models, seven Boeing 737-700, three Boeing 777-200 and five Boeing 777-300.

According to João Lourenço, the idea of reinforcing the company’s fleet is due, among other factors, to the entry into operation of the new Luanda International Airport, in 2023.

For him, the expansion of the new airport justifies thinking about reinforcing the TAAG fleet, which has used, for long hauls, exclusively, for several decades, the aircraft of the American brand Boeing.

From his point of view, it is important that the company’s fleet is in line with the importance and size of the new airport.
