Veteran Wants Young People to "Give Themselves" to the Country

Africa-Press – Angola. Nationalist and member of the Association of Former Warriors of Angola, Bernardo Carlos Cambundo, urged the youth this Saturday in Lubango, Huíla province, to “dedicate themselves” to the challenges facing the country and preserve the values won in the past and present.

The former combatant was speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony commemorating the Day of the Martyrs of Colonial Repression, to be celebrated this Sunday under the motto: “January 4th Honoring the Martyrs of Colonial Repression is Keeping Our History Alive”.

The veteran stressed that the active participation of youth is essential for building Angola as a sovereign, peaceful and developing country, maintaining a commitment to historical memory and national identity.

According to Bernardo Cambundo, this attitude of dedication translates into daily commitment to work, discipline, a spirit of sacrifice, and the ability to serve the common good above individual interests.

The former combatant argued that young people should avoid a mentality of “vandalism” and instead focus on creativity, entrepreneurship, and transforming difficulties into opportunities.

He further emphasized that former combatants are proud to see young people today living in freedom, without oppression, discrimination, or colonial domination.Regarding the recognition of former combatants, he explained that this is not limited to material goods, but also includes moral and historical recognition, expressed in symbolic acts such as participation in official ceremonies.

The date honors thousands of defenseless national citizens, massacred on January 4, 1961, in the Baixa de Cassanje region, Malanje province, where workers were protesting against the terrible working conditions imposed by the then Portuguese colonial regime.

It constitutes a historical landmark of national resistance and serves as a reference for strengthening patriotism, national unity, and historical awareness, especially among young people.

The event, which took place in the Southern Military Region, was witnessed by members of the Government, officers, sergeants, privates, and civilian workers.
