Africa-Press – Angola. The winner of the first edition of the National Human Rights Award, in the Human Rights Personality of the Year category, Maria Teresa Manuela, said that she will continue the fight for the dignity of Angolan and African women.
In Luanda, after receiving the trophy and a check in the amount of 700,000 kwanzas, Maria Teresa Manuela said that the feeling of fighting all the evils that affect the dignity and advancement of women is evident in her life.
She stressed that the defense of human rights and the promotion of the dignity of Angolan women and others will continue on her agenda, regardless of the circumstances that each of these women is going through.
“I will continue to honor the country and help women, as they are the most vulnerable”, said Maria Teresa Manuela, after receiving from the hands of the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Francisco Queiroz.
Maria Teresa Manuela is the first Angolan commissioner on the African Commission on Human Rights and special rapporteur on prisons, conditions of detention and policing in Africa and women’s rights on the continent.
The winner has carried out missions for the promotion and defense of human rights, verification actions at national and regional level, as well as participating in the preparation of reports, training and case follow-up.
Maria Teresa Manuela is a Master’s student in Criminal Sciences at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Agostinho Neto (UAN).
In the Culture of Peace and Citizenship category, the award and the check valued at 400,000 kwanzas were given to the Action for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA-Regional), which covers Huíla, Cunene and Namibe.
The director general of ADRA, Carlos Cambuta, said that the award means recognition of the work they develop in the field of defense and promotion of human rights, especially with regard to civil, political, economic and cultural rights.
The Human Rights Center of the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) won the third and fourth categories, namely Community and Humanitarian Actions and Research in Human Rights). Therefore, he received 500 thousand kwanzas, in the first classification, and 650 thousand, for the second.
The award was launched in October 2021 by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.
