Africa-Press – Angola. The writer and promoter of the “Read and Learn” project, Isdore Otombo, defended, this Saturday, a greater incentive for young people to consult libraries in order to improve their reading and research habits.

In a declaration, regarding the World Libraries Day (July 1st), he considered fundamental the education and the incentive of bibliographic consultation between students and professionals of the different sectors, since the book liberates and expands the psycho-social development of the individual.

“We need to alert society about the importance of libraries and books, since the book is a “mute master”, which teaches how to learn content that is often not transmitted in schools”, he maintained.

For him, it is essential that in the curriculum programs teachers create conditions for students to investigate, in order to encourage them to read.

He stated that libraries are physical collections for consultation, updating, refreshment and the foundation of any subject, hence the need for public and private institutions to invest in these structures.

“If we don’t have libraries, it is difficult to encourage people to read, because it is from these places that we must instill the importance of reading in the minds of young people”, he said.

Cunene with a library

It should be noted that Cunene has a municipal library, located in Ondjiva, with a bibliographic collection of five thousand and 100 books.

The librarian technician of Cuanhama, José Kakuleti, said that the institution receives an average of 12 to 14 users daily, with particular emphasis on primary and secondary education students.

The official lamented the negligence on the part of society, which tends to leave libraries aside in favor of the Internet.

World Libraries Day is celebrated on the 1st of July, with a view to extolling the importance of reading in people’s education and training, according to a UNESCO manifesto.
