Africa-Press – Angola. The 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Friday was marked by a performance of the emblematic Zaïko Langa Langa orchestra, thus considered the high point of the celebrations.

The event that was organized by the Angolan Embassy in Kinshasa, brought together the Angolan community, representatives of the Congolese government, members of the diplomatic corps, and prominent figures from local society.

The presence of the group, led by renowned musician Nyoka Longo, son of Angolan parents and one of the most influential names in the Congolese rumba musical style, gave the ceremony an atmosphere of strong cultural identity and historical connection between the two peoples.

With a repertoire full of hits, the ensemble captivated the guests and reinforced the special bond between Angola and the DRC.

During the ceremony, the Angolan ambassador to the DRC, Miguel da Costa, emphasized that the fiftieth anniversary of Independence represents “a historic milestone of recognition and value of the efforts of millions of Angolans who fought for the liberation of the country”.

The diplomat also highlighted the symbolic significance of celebrating the anniversary in a country that hosts one of the largest Angolan communities abroad.

A major figure in Congolese culture with Angolan roots

Joseph Nyoka Mvula, known artistically as Nyoka Longo or “Jossart”, was born in 1953 in Kinshasa and became one of the most prestigious voices in Congolese music.

Connected to the Angolan community from an early age, he built an emblematic career leading Zaïko Langa Langa, a group that influenced generations of musicians and gave rise to bands such as Viva La Musica, Yoka Lokole, and Langa Langa Stars.

Nyoka Longo, the leader of the group since 1984, has produced hits such as “Dédé sur mesure”, “SVP Mbey”, and “Payment Cash”. He is also the co-founder of the ProZal label, responsible for distributing the group’s productions.

Commemorative program involves the Angolan community

The Angolan Embassy launched a broad commemorative program in Kinshasa to celebrate the 50th anniversary of National Independence, with recreational and cultural activities and talks held on November 4th, 8th and 11th.

Under the motto “Angola 50 years: Preserving and valuing the achievements reached, building a better future”, the initiatives brought together the Angolan community residing in the DRC, as well as friends of Angola, in an atmosphere of celebration and reflection on the country’s historical journey.
