Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) has handed over the P4.6 million sport facility consisting of volleyball courts and two ablution blocks to Radisele Junior Secondary School.
The handing over, which included the donation of 12 volleyballs and 43 volleyball shoes also marked the opening of Radisele Centre of Excellence.
Speaking at the occasion recently, BNSC chairperson Marumo Morule said the event was more than just the commissioning of infrastructure but a statement of belief in the power of sport to shape lives, build communities and inspire a nation.
He said they believed that a strong foundation in grassroots sport was key to producing athletes who could compete and excel on the world stage.
Morule highlighted that investments like these were about creating opportunities for young people to discover their talents, develop discipline, and grow into confident, capable citizens.
He urged the school leadership, the athletes, and community to take care of the facilities by protecting and maintaining them so as to retain their excellent condition for many years to come.
“I look forward to seeing this centre of excellence continue to produce not just great athletes, but great citizens”, Morule said.
Furthermore, he encouraged students to take part in school sport, adding that this would help develop more elite athletes in Botswana.
Morule said students who were actively engaged in sports were less likely to fall into destructive habits such as drugs and alcohol abuse.
BNSC acting chief executive officer, Makuke Makuke said the project began in 2023 with a clear vision to enhance the training environment for centres of excellence, which aligned with BNSC commitment of developing sports from grassroots level.
He said Radisele was not chosen by chance when the Centre of Sport Excellence programme began in 2011 but for its central location and the fact that the school had a remarkable track record in volleyball and athletics as it had produced outstanding sport persons.
Makuke said among its many successes, they celebrated the achievements of Bafitlhelanye Matlhare of volleyball and Sedilame Boseja, the Mares goalkeeper as both of them were learners at Radisele Junior Secondary School.
He said they were looking forward to see the school producing athletes who would carry the Botswana flag, emphasising that facilities alone do not make champions but the athletes’s discipline, determination and hard work. The school head, Uyapo Samuel said the facilities came at the right time, saying they would ensure that they were taken care of.
