Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana has taken a major step toward building a knowledge-driven agricultural sector with the official launch of nano fertilisers by President Duma Gideon Boko. The initiative is expected to modernise farming practices, improve crop yields, and position the country as a leader in smart and sustainable agriculture.
The project is driven by Lone Threads in partnership with international companies IFFCO and Nardi. This collaboration brings world-class expertise to local farms, ensuring both commercial and smallholder farmers can access advanced agricultural technology. The innovation focuses on enhancing soil health, optimising fertiliser use, and reducing production costs.
Speaking at the launch, President Boko highlighted the importance of modern technologies in ensuring food security and national economic resilience. He emphasised that agriculture must evolve beyond traditional methods to remain competitive and sustainable, particularly in the face of climate change and unpredictable rainfall.
Botswana’s agriculture has historically relied on conventional planting, fertilising, and pesticide application without fully understanding soil and climate dynamics. Declining crop yields due to inconsistent rainfall have made it clear that rain-fed agriculture alone is no longer sufficient to meet national food demands.
The nano fertiliser initiative aims to address these challenges by providing farmers with precise, science-based solutions. By adopting this technology, farmers can increase efficiency, improve productivity, and contribute to Botswana’s self-sufficiency in food production.
President Boko also commended the local and international experts behind the project, noting that their collaboration positions Botswana as a hub for agricultural innovation. He urged farmers and institutions to embrace modern agri-technology as a path to sustainable growth, competitiveness, and long-term food security.
The launch of nano fertilisers marks a milestone in Botswana’s agricultural development, combining scientific innovation with practical application. It sets the stage for a more productive, resilient, and technologically advanced farming sector that can meet both current and future challenges.
