Botswana Revitalizes Metallurgy Lab to Enhance Minerals

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, announced the Botswana Geoscience Institute (BGI) Metallurgy Laboratory as a key strategic facility retained and revitalised following the closure of Bamangwato Concessions Limited (BCL Limited). The announcement was made at Sam Sono Stadium in Selebi Phikwe.

Minister Kenewendo said the refurbishment of the Metallurgy Laboratory represents a major step toward establishing a modern facility that will add value to Botswana’s minerals before they leave the country. The laboratory will provide local analysis and testing for minerals such as copper, nickel, and cobalt, ensuring that both value and technical expertise remain in Botswana. Once fully operational, the lab will conduct advanced testing and mineral analyses, removing the need to export raw samples for verification.

The facility is expected to significantly reduce costs, as Botswana currently outsources mineral analysis services at nearly P2 billion annually. By bringing these capabilities in-country, the laboratory will strengthen the nation’s mining sector and support economic growth.

The Metallurgy Laboratory will also contribute to job creation, with projections of up to 300 high-value positions for graduates. These roles will focus on scientific research, mineral testing, and technical expertise, enhancing skills development and employment opportunities in the mining and research sectors.

Minister Kenewendo emphasised that the lab is a cornerstone for Botswana’s strategy to retain value from its mineral resources, build local expertise, and drive sustainable economic growth. The revitalisation signals the government’s commitment to modernising the minerals sector while empowering local talent.
