Minister Kenewendo Launches Energy Compact and Solar Program

Africa-Press – Botswana. On 20 October 2025, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, will officially launch the Botswana Energy Compact and the Revised Rooftop Solar Programme. The event will take place at 09:00 hours at Hotel 430, marking a significant step in the country’s transition toward sustainable energy.

The Botswana Energy Compact aims to strengthen the nation’s renewable energy framework by setting clear targets for energy generation, efficiency, and accessibility. It is designed to attract investment in clean energy, promote technological innovation, and ensure that Botswana meets both domestic and international energy commitments.

Alongside the Energy Compact, the Revised Rooftop Solar Programme will be unveiled. The programme seeks to expand the adoption of rooftop solar installations across residential, commercial, and public sectors. By encouraging local generation of electricity, it aims to reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuels, lower electricity costs, and increase energy security. The revision incorporates lessons learned from previous initiatives and introduces measures to streamline installation, financing, and maintenance.

During the event, Minister Kenewendo will also announce Botswana’s authorisation as an official issuer of the International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC). This milestone allows the country to certify renewable energy production and trade these certificates internationally, opening opportunities for investment and integration into global renewable energy markets. I-REC authorisation positions Botswana as a credible participant in international clean energy initiatives and reinforces the government’s commitment to sustainable development.

The launch underscores the Ministry’s focus on accelerating renewable energy adoption, fostering local expertise, and creating an enabling environment for investment in the energy sector. By promoting rooftop solar and certifying renewable energy through I-REC, Botswana strengthens its capacity to meet climate goals while providing economic and environmental benefits to communities.

Minister Kenewendo’s announcement highlights a pivotal moment for Botswana’s energy sector, signaling a clear commitment to green growth, energy independence, and regional leadership in renewable energy adoption.
