Africa-Press – Botswana. In the music landscape, where mastery of the saxophone is often seen as a pursuit reserved for those with years of formal training, Ketshepaone Ranama, better known as Sax Giveon, has emerged as a dazzling beacon of talent.

His journey into the realm of music illuminates an unconventional path to success, resonating deeply with those who dare to follow their passion.

Armed with passion and a fierce spirit nurtured within the walls of his church band, Ranama, a self-taught saxophonist, crafted a striking identity for himself in the industry.

Growing up in the lively streets of Botshabelo in Selebi Phikwe, Ranama said he was enticed by the rich, soulful sounds of the saxophone drifting from the church’s music band. The vibrant melodies stirred something deep within him.

Inspired by the unifying power of music, he said he eagerly joined the band and from that moment on, his route was set and marked by unwavering determination.

When the curtains closed on his academic pursuits after failing to do well in his Form 5 examination, many would have crumbled under despair. But not Ranama.

He said the setback acted as a catalyst, fuelling his determination to pursue the elusive instrument, and his journey towards mastery progressed, albeit alongside the challenging reality of limited resources.

He said he refused to let financial constraints determine his fate. Taking on various odd jobs, including working with Ipelegeng, he saved every penny.

“The day I triumphantly brought home a second-hand saxophone, which I bought through hard-earned labour, was a moment of pure joy. I felt my dream had materialised and my commitment to learn and grow was reignited, and I eventually mastered the intricate techniques of the saxophone,” he said.

Ranama said that voluntarily performing at different events also became his stepping stone, and with each note he played, he transformed what may have seemed like an uphill journey into a mesmerising spectacle of growth and artistry.

Whispers of his extraordinary talent started to spread; invitations to perform at local events poured in.

He said each gig opened doors to new opportunities, gradually capturing the attention of corporate clients.

With his unmatched melodies and electrifying stage presence, Ranama quickly became a favourite at high-profile events, often leaving audiences spellbound.

The saxophone is not merely an instrument that he plays; it has become his profound means of navigating life’s complexities and joys.

His journey underscores the significance of self-belief, passion, and relentless hard work, all of which validate the dream of becoming a saxophonist.

He has cultivated more than just a successful career but also established a rich legacy that inspires others to embrace their unique talents beyond the ordinary classroom setting.

Ranama demonstrated that even the toughest challenges can be bravely faced and overcome through creativity and commitment, proving that non-academic talents can indeed unlock the door to extraordinary possibilities.
