Africa-Press – Botswana. The Apostolic Power Chapel Church has been applauded for its plans to develop a tourism resort site in Francistown.
Government was more than ready to facilitate individuals and groups of individuals who wanted to have a stake in the tourism sector, stated tourism and environment minister Ms Philda Kereng.
She was speaking during a gala dinner organised by the Apostolic Power Chapel Church at Francistown’s River Deck Resort on Friday.
“Collaborations are critical here and you can venture into the sector as individuals, or as the church. It is all possible,” she said adding that all it required was mindset change.
Minister Kereng said Batswana needed to look into the entire spectrum and value chain within the tourism sector.
Further welcoming the church’s idea of bringing together the business community to brainstorm under the theme Viewing Botswana with an Eye of Tourism, she stressed that the church needed to enter the economic space and grow the economy.
The church had acquitted itself well with the spiritual development of Batswana, she said, it was now time it got into the business space and in particular the tourism sector.
The city’s deputy mayor, Mr Lesego Kwambala also welcomed the church’s initiative calling it a step in the right direction.
He said the initiative would contribute to the revival of the city’s economy, currently in a comatose state.
“As the gateway to the country’s flora and fauna, we are strategically located and can benefit a lot from the tourism sector,” Mr Kwambala said urging the church to continue with the socio-economic development of its members as well fellow citizens.
Reverend Tirelo Phalalo said the church aspired to be a domicile of both prayer and economic empowerment.
“I want the church to be a place of empowerment for our people and do away with leading people who are miserable,” he said.
Reverend Phalalo said as an important stakeholder, the church should have a meaningful stake in Botswana’s socio-economic development.
