Africa-Press – Botswana. The Mayor of Francistown, Mr Gaone Majere, has praised the Mascom Batanani walk for its significant contribution to the city’s economy and social fabric.
Delivering a keynote address at the seventh Mascom Batanani walk gala dinner on Friday, Mr Majere highlighted the event’s role in stimulating local economic growth, creating temporary employment opportunities, and promoting urban tourism.
“The city of Francistown has positioned itself as a leading destination for conferences, exhibitions, and events, with tourism being a key economic driver,” Mr Majere said.
He said initiatives like the Mascom Batanani walk were crucial to the development of Francistown and the well-being of its people.
Mr Majere emphasised that the walk, themed: Step in Unity Against Breast Cancer, aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women in Botswana and globally.
“Early detection and awareness are key to saving lives, and through this walk, we are not only raising awareness but also taking active steps towards saving lives,” he added.
The Mayor commended Mascom for its commitment to corporate social responsibility and urged everyone to use the walk as an opportunity to educate, support, and empower, especially women and young girls who were mostly affected by breast cancer. “Let us continue to take bold steps, no matter how small, towards solving the challenges that face our communities,” Mr Majere urged.
Mascom Chief Executive Officer, Ms Dzene Makhwade-Seboni, reiterated the company’s dedication to addressing challenges facing Botswana through various initiatives.
“We are committed to addressing challenges facing Botswana through various initiatives, and each year, we focus on a different theme that addresses a specific issue affecting our society,” she said, highlighting the company’s focus on different themes each year, including gender-based violence, children’s rights protection, mental health awareness, and digital safety awareness.
